PDF Where Is Your Body? And Other Essays on Race, Gender, and the Law: PDF

by Mari J. Matsuda

This book is awesome. The second section focused on power and language, which sounds helpful, but it was a little too law-focused. It was sort of like picking out the stuff that was useful for me from all the law stuff. I mean she is a law professor so that's how it goes. The third section was on Asian American stuff, which I found very helpful.

I can feel my brain shifting when I read this book. On one hand, I find it very inspiring, like when she talks about being the only Asian American in most law departments she's been in, I really see her as a role model. I feel strength in that. But then I think of the privileges we've had as Japanese Americans in Hawai'i and I start thinking like I shouldn't feel that I am this underdog, overcoming, etc. It's very strange.

She also talks about how nisei are seen as like the sacrificers and the ones who did so much for the JA community and the sansei are mostly called spoiled sansei. Then I think, Damn, if the sansei are spoiled, what about the yonsei?
