Very chatty. It doesn't try to be a "work of art," except maybe the last chapter, on love. But that chapter reads as if it had been written in 1950, not 2000: there are many mentions of "a face," "a love," "a person"—no gender attached. Perhaps this fear of coming out of the closet is partly responsible for Gala's being unknown outside Spain and a few other Spanish-speaking countries. Maybe some translations do exist, but if so they are well hidden. When he mentions other writers, there's not one who comes from outside the Spanish-speaking world. An insular attitude, or I should say "Peninsular."
